Emily stood at the edge of the deep end. She was all alone. Water drops from her blue swimsuit was dripping onto the floor. Emily pulled her ponytail tight and her goggles down over her eyes. "You can do this, Emily." She coached herself. She needed to beat her record time if she wanted to place at the next competition. With a deep breath, and arms pointed out, Emily dove. Like a graceful swan she moved through the water like it was air. One stroke, two stroke, three stroke... At the other end of the pool Emily flipped and kicked off to head back. "Stroke...breathe...Stroke...breathe..." She thought to herself as she did so. Reaching her starting point she once again flipped and kicked and in seconds was on her way back down the lane.
When Emily swam, she forgot about everything else. She felt free. Free from school and her parents and everything else in her life. It was just her and the water. And she loved it.
After a few more laps Emily emerged from the water and hoisted herself out of the pool. "Yes." She whispered under her breath. It was a personal best. "Now if only I can do that at the meet." she said, still talking to herself. Grabbing a towel, Emily began to pat herself her dry. She squeezed the water from her hair as she entered the locker room. As she pulled her clothes from her locker she smiled. She had done it.
